What is it?

DOSBox is a DOS emulator — it allows modern computers to run software originally written for MS-DOS, an early operating system from the 1980s–1990s.

MS-DOS programs, including old games, educational software, and utilities, no longer run natively on modern operating systems like Linux, Windows, or macOS. DOSBox solves this problem by emulating the DOS environment, so these programs can run as if they were on an old PC.

In the software development ecosystem, DOSBox is primarily used for:

  • Replace game.exe with the executable of the DOS program.
  • DOSBox will now run it as if it were an old DOS PC.

  • Navigate directories and manage files:

dir       # lists files in the current directory
cd folder # changes directory to 'folder'
copy a.txt b.txt # copies a.txt to b.txt
  1. Exit DOSBox:
exit
