plocate

What is it?

plocate is a high-performance, database-backed file search utility for Linux. It is a modern replacement for the traditional locate and mlocate commands. Unlike find, which traverses the filesystem in real-time, plocate queries a pre-indexed database of files and directories, allowing it to find any file on the system almost instantaneously. It is specifically optimized for speed, being significantly faster than its predecessors while requiring a smaller index.

In the software development ecosystem, plocate belongs to the system-wide discovery and navigation layer. It is the primary tool for locating system headers, configuration files, or deeply buried project artifacts that are not in the current working directory.
