What is it?

VirtualBox is a free and open-source hosted hypervisor developed by Oracle. It allows users to create and manage virtual machines (VMs), which act as independent computer systems running within a host operating system. This enables the simultaneous operation of multiple, isolated guest operating systems—such as various Linux distributions, Windows, or specialized environments—on a single physical machine.

In the software development ecosystem, VirtualBox belongs to the infrastructure and virtualization layer. It is a fundamental tool for environment isolation, cross-platform testing, and safe experimentation with system-level configurations.

Virtualization is one of the cornerstones of modern software engineering.
